Standing Firm: Growing Through the Storm

This week at Myrtle House Community Church, Martin O’Brien continued our series ‘Living the Transformed Life’, exploring the next two qualities Peter encourages us to develop in 2 Peter 1:5–7: patient endurance and godliness.

Patient endurance, from the Greek word hypomonē, is more than simply waiting for difficult circumstances to end. It is the strength to remain faithful and stand firm when life becomes difficult. Peter reminds us that following Jesus does not mean we will avoid trials, but that God can use those trials to shape our character and make us more like Christ.

As Romans 5:3–5 reminds us, trials can produce endurance, endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our hope. God’s purpose is not simply to get us through difficult seasons, but to work within those seasons, teaching us to trust Him more deeply.

We also looked at godliness — a life centred on God in every area. It is about recognising His presence and allowing Him to shape our choices, attitudes and actions. Godliness isn't something we manufacture through our own strength; it grows as we respond to God’s grace and learn to live by the Spirit.

Our trials can reveal what we truly trust and where we place our dependence. Difficult circumstances can teach us to pray differently, listen differently and depend more fully on God. Through patient endurance, we can discover that even in the hardest seasons, God is at work forming something deeper within us.

So the challenge for us is simple: Is God at the centre of our daily lives, or merely a part of them? And when difficulties come, do they push us away from God or draw us closer to Him?

As we continue to grow in faith, may we learn to stand firm, pursue godliness and trust that God is still working in us — even in the middle of the storm.
